Founded by the Phoenicians, invaded by the Romans, Moors, Byzantines and Visigoths, the small coastal enclave of Fuengirola's streets are thronged with tourists, of various nationalities but mostly British, its beaches are crowded even though it is still too early for summer, yet the sun's rays invade the city. The bustle of the streets and the pounding waves form the symphony that accompanies the background of our footage, some workers of the National Pro Wrestling Association march amidst suitcases and equipment towards the Castillo Sohail, where the Mad Bull, native to the area, awaits them.
The leather jacket, gold chains, or the briefs he wears to step into the ring and provide a five-star show for the fans are nowhere to be found, instead his attire is replaced by something more casual. Shorts, trainers paired with his own branded tank top available at the NPWA shop, and yes, his trademark sunglasses.
It's been years since Garcia last set foot on his home turf, and since his international debut as a member of Carnage Pro Wrestling, his only bouts in Europe have been in London and Rome. It was in London where he won his first ever overseas world championship just last year, a title he still retains, and Rome where he suffered a loss to Ollie Maverick, another member of the Western Conference, or the "Bestern Conference" as the GM likes to call it. The homesickness is palpable on Adam's face, as his typical smirk and unfriendly face is exchanged for an honest joy that floods his body, after years, he is finally home.
Unfortunately for him, García has realised that the time has come for the video package, unplugging his headphones and putting them in his pocket, he approaches the cameramen and the crew, who, after making sure that all the microphones are working properly and that access to the area is temporarily blocked, are waiting for García's signal to start the promo.
Garcia lets out a breath, shakes his hands, raises them to his face and lightly taps his cheeks.
ADAM GARCIA: "Alright, let's do this."
He then nods his head, and the scene begins.
ADAM GARCIA: "Every person is following a destiny, or at least, I've always thought of it that way, The dice have already been cast, from the day we are born until we die, a completely calculated sequence of events written by something we are incapable of comprehending". He stops for a second, trying to explain his point. "And to think that everything I aspire to, everything I have fought for, all the times I have won, and those times I have been defeated, has been dictated by another, is something that infuriates me. In the old days the Norse spoke of the nornas, goddesses of destiny, the Greeks spoke of the moiras, weavers of each of our lives, from the most pathetic to the most fabled. They were feared by the gods because they themselves did not trust that they could alternate between the present, the past and the future’"
The bull exhales, dissatisfied with this fact.
ADAM GARCIA: "But unlike others, I don't intend to bow my head, or be one of the sheep in the herd, I plan on being the sole cause of my victories, and the only one to blame for my defeats. To be the cause of good and evil, smiles and tears, blood and life. And I'd be brave enough to burn the Yggdrasil, or set out on twelve quests like Hercules, I'd put my life on the line, just to be the writer upon my life, in my hand is a pen stained in gore to write the first line of a long story".
From the same pocket where he previously kept his headphones, Adam pulls out a piece of paper, which after being unwrapped and focused on camera unveils a ticket to fight in the NPWA Rumble in a few days.
ADAM GARCIA: "This paper, is my ticket, a direct flight to the top, out of all the candidates, only one will be chosen to climb the sacred steps of this company, a place in the postseason, an All-Star surrounded by the créme de la créme. While the losers fall into the harsh reality, that they get to play the role of Icarus after trying to escape from the comfort of earth, to the tough battles that lie among the stars" His tone remains serene, but firm “And I clearly won't let anyone melt my wings”.
Having finished his monologue, he returns to the ticket to his pocket.
ADAM GARCIA: "No island or labyrinth will be able to contain me, because I will crawl away from them if I have to. Some may take my words with a grain of salt, I do not judge them, for I have sinned in the past of narcissism, but for better or worse I have learned that blind words cannot guide my path, and that the only way to take the reins, is to learn from my past mistakes. To take advantage of the opportunities to come I learned from my fights, every opponent is a lesson, and only those that manage to leave a mark are important to remember, for you only learn from wounds that leave scars, and in the last few months my body has been covered in them." He takes off his shirt showing some bruises and scars he has recently obtained, proving that his point can be taken in a literal way as well, and proceeds to put his shirt back on. "A couple of weeks ago I said at XHW that I am battle hardened, and I stand by those words, I have been through experiences that most of the roster would take for torture, and yet I stand tall, with two championships on my shoulders, and a thirst for success yet to be quenched."
His typical smirk eventually shows, as he gives a simple mocking glance at the camera for a couple of seconds before continuing, getting his breath back in this short break.
ADAM GARCIA: "So believe me when I say that I understand first-hand how tough this sport can be. That's why I'm not lying when I say I'll reach stardom sooner or later, after all, I'm one of the brightest stars in recent times, each word behind this promo is coldly calculated, woven exclusively by me, without the intervention of the divine. A mere mortal, a human fighting with the tenacity and fury of a bull to achieve a place in the annals of Lucha Libre history, wrestling in front of a pool of such great talent is but a simple investment in teachings that will stay with me for a lifetime. Winning that postseason spot? That's just the cherry on top, but to taste the sweet victory I have to stand as the only man standing". He smiles, thinking about all the opponents he will face in a matter of days.
ADAM GARCIA: "Sean Parker, the man picked to represent the top seed in the draft, the very man I had my first fight with in the pre-season against a couple of Daves. Ollie Maverick, a wrestler..." he stops for a moment and reflects "No, a lunatic, someone who bout after bout was able to defeat me, one of the very few who have my respect, the new owner of Pro Wrestling Valor, Justin York, it looks like facing my bosses in other companies is going to become a regular occurrence." He laughs. "The point is there's a lot of veterans and I'll be happy to steal a couple of tricks to add to my arsenal from here on out, but there's also a lot of young blood, people like myself, the Busfin brothers, fun fact, BBC's growin' on me recently to be honest, rookies like Kaitlyn, who literally knows more about riding horses than just doing a simple headlock and still puts his whole being into learning the sport and wrestling with everything. They're all great fighters. " Garcia nods thoughtfully "But I have to prove that I can be better than them, that my history precedes theirs, that my time in this company will be remembered, and to do that I have to throw their asses over the third rope and stand my ground. I will show why I was picked in the top 10, and by the way, I will make it clear why I should be number one next time."
As the promo ends, he patiently waits for the microphones to be removed, his work is done, and it's time to continue his short holiday before training resumes, but the cameras are still on as Garcia takes off his trainers and t-shirt and runs to the beach, ready to take a dive.
